In architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC), founders want more than just capital. They want investors who understand the industry and can offer guidance rooted in real-world experience. Hometeam Ventures was created, in part, because the venture ecosystem lacks investors who have the experience and networks to guide founders through the nuances of construction.
As demand for construction technology accelerates, so does the need for startups that can meet the need. Our fellowship is about preparing the next generation of investors that can be exceptional partners, with industry fluency, to those emerging #contech founders.
The venture capital industry wields enormous influence, shaping the future by choosing which ideas and people get the funding to build companies and reshape our world. Founders benefit, and ultimately, society benefits, when those making these decisions bring a wide range of backgrounds and experiences to the table. Our research fellowship aims to expand access to the world of venture capital and startups to “outsiders” based on their merit, not their connections.
This field, like many others, has a scarcity of diverse founders. Many of tomorrow’s standout construction tech companies will be founded by leaders currently working at startups like Procore, ICON, and others. If we want these future founders to reflect a wider spectrum of backgrounds, we need to increase the representation of diverse leaders at the senior level in contech startups today. We aim to be a bridge, helping diverse leaders from academia and established AEC companies access the startup ecosystem as a foundation for potentially building their own companies in the future.
